Simply crush the fruit cake, mix it with the orange juice (or rum), melt the chocolate, mix together then roll into balls and coat in sprinkles!

- Fruit Cake - you can use either light or dark fruit cake in this recipe
- Liquid - choose between orange juice or rum to soak the fruit cake in. Traditionally, rum balls are made with rum, however, using orange juice makes them kid-friendly!
- Chocolate - I recommend using dark chocolate melts as they melt easily
- Chocolate Sprinkles - for coating the rum balls in. Alternatively you could use coconut or cocoa powder.
Step By Step Instructions
It's SO easy to make our Thermomix Rum Balls!

Step 1 - Crush The Fruit Cake
Break the fruit cake into large chunks and place into the Thermomix.
Mix until fine crumbs remain.
Add the orange juice (or rum) and mix to combine.
Set aside in a seperate bowl to soak.
Step 2 - Melt The Chocolate
Place the chocolate melts into the Thermomix bowl and heat until smooth and melted.
Step 3 - Mix
Place the soaked fruit cake back into the Thermomix bowl (with the melted chocolate).
Mix until well combined (see tips below).
Step 4 - Roll Into Balls
Roll the mixture into tablespoon sized balls and toss through the chocolate sprinkles to coat.
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

- either light or dark fruit cake is suitable for use (personally I prefer light fruit cake).
- use rum for an adults-only and more traditional version of rum balls.
- replace the rum with orange juice for a non-alcoholic and kid-friendly version.
- once you've melted the chocolate, work quickly to add the fruit cake and mix (before the chocolate starts to set).
- when mixing the melted chocolate and fruit cake, the mixture will be VERY dense and sticky and the blades may find it hard to mix. Use the spatula through the MC hole to help mix. If your blades are struggling, simply remove the Thermomix bowl and mix together with the spatula.
- you can substitute the chocolate sprinkles for coconut or cocoa if you prefer.
- store in airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
- freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
FAQs
Unfortunately no. The mixture is very dense and sticky and the machine wont be able to mix a double batch.
When mixing the melted chocolate with the soaked fruit cake, the blades may struggle to mix. Use the spatula through the MC hole to help move the mixture around. If the blades have become completely stuck, simply remove the Thermomix bowl from the machine and use the spatula to mix through.
Traditional rum balls are made using fruit cake and melted chocolate, however, chocolate coconut balls are often referred to as rum balls as well (even though technically, they are not!). You can find our chocolate coconut balls recipe here.

Thermomix Rum Balls
Equipment
- Thermomix
Ingredients
- 800 g fruit cake
- 125 g dark or yellow rum or orange juice
- 500 g dark chocolate
- chocolate sprinkles for rolling
Instructions
- Break the fruit cake into small chunks and place into the Thermomix bowl. Chop for 5 seconds, Speed 6. Add the orange juice and mix for 10 seconds, Speed 3.Pour into a seperate bowl and leave to soak for 30 minutes.
- In a clean and dry Thermomix bowl, add the dark chocolate. Melt for 5minutes, 50 degrees, Speed 2 (scrape down the sides of the bowl partway through) - or until melted.
- Once melted, add the fruit cake and mix for 20 seconds, Speed 6 (using the spatula though the MC hole to help mix). Scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix for a further 10 seconds, Speed 6 (with the help of the spatula).
- Roll into tablespoon sized balls and then coat in the chocolate sprinkles.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
