For our family, one of the best budget-saving features of the Thermomix is being able to make our own homemade yoghurt.... and this vanilla bean flavoured recipe is by far our favourite!

How To Make Yoghurt In The Thermomix

Tips For Making Yoghurt In The Thermomix

    Use Full Cream Milk

This results in a thicker yoghurt than skim milk.

    Milk Powder

Milk powder helps to thicken the yoghurt.

Use A High Quality Pot Set Yoghurt As The Starter

We recommend using a high quality pot set yoghurt (like Jalna) as it needs to have active cultures. Once you've made you first batch of yoghurt, you can reserve 100g to use as the starter for the next batch.

    Varying The Amount Of Sugar

In this recipe we use 40g caster sugar. You can reduce this amount if you prefer a less sweet yoghurt. You can also increase it if you prefer a sweeter yoghurt. It might take a few batches to work out the amount of sugar you like.

Keep The Yoghurt Warm For 12 Hours

In order for your yoghurt to be thick and creamy, it needs to be kept warm for 12 hours. I recommend warming a ThermoServer  with boiling water, then pouring out the water and drying it thoroughly before pouring in the yoghurt. I like to then wrap my ThermoServer in a large blanket and place it into a warm room (I use the laundry). The longer the yoghurt is left out of the fridge, the more acidic it will taste. I find that 12 hours is perfect (if you live in a hot climate, 8-10 hours is probably sufficient).

Store In An Airtight Container In The Fridge

The yoghurt will continue to thicken up to 24 hours after it's refrigerated.

    Doubling The Recipe

This recipe can easily be doubled.

Hello! I’m about to make this yogurt for the first time. If I put it into our hot garage (25° today in Sydney) will it be okay given that overnight temps will fall to around 7°? Thanks!

      Hi there,
I just made this yoghurt, followed the recipe exactly but have found my yoghurt is not ‘pot set’ consistency.
Has anyone else found this with this yoghurt or have I done something wrong?
      Thanks 😊

Can I ask how warm is a warm room? I live in a cold climate town and we usually have the heating on during the day so may be about 20 degrees Celsius is this ok?

Hi Kathryn, I'd try for a slightly warmer temp (or wrap in a blanket or with a hot water bottle).

Thank you for the reply. I ended up wrapping it in one of those throw rugs that are electric and it worked perfectly!
Will be a regular in our house now. Not sure why yogurt scared me for so long haha

Followed recipe ingredients exactly. Used farmers union vanilla and easiyo container for 12 hours.
Better than any other yoghurt recipe I have tried or yoghurt sachets from supermarket. Will use this recipe again. Thank you for sharing.

Can I ask how long this would typically last in the fridge for? Thank you!

Is it best to use long life milk? Or is regular milk ok?

Do you think I could pour mixture in to sinchies/reusable pouches prior to letting it set? Also, if we don't have a thermoserve - any ideas on suitable alternatives? We live in a warm climate.

I have an EasiYo yoghurt maker, could I sit it in that for the 12 hours if I don't have a thermoserver?

I use the easy y maker all the time.
My never fail recipe is as follows
        400ml room temperature water,
1 and 3 quarter cups of powdered milk,
3 tablespoons of previous made yoghurt
Shake with lid on until mixed thoroughly,
Fill till the 1 litre mark on the side of container.
Fill up to the red insert in the outer container of the easy yo maker with boiling
Place you container inside, close lid and leave for 10 hours.
Remove and place in fridge to set.

Hello! I love the flavour, but even though I have followed the recipe exactly 3 or 4 times now, my yoghurt is quite runny (more like a Yoplait than a Jalna)
Is there anything I can do to help thicken it up without compromising the flavour?

Hi Melanie, I find the biggest factor is how warm the area that it's left in is!

Seriously so happy to make this ! So simple and delicious, easy to have long life milk on hand whenever I need to make it. I’ve just experimented with adding jam instead of sugar for extra flavouring, can’t wait to see how it turns out!
